Launched by the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) in October of 2006, VOTE411.org is a "one-stop-shop" for election related information. It provides nonpartisan information to the public with both general and state-specific information on the election process.
Michigan's VOTE411 assisted over 613,000 Michigan voters in the 2020 elections.

Nonpartisan Voter Guides

The LWV publishes written candidate responses to questions from the community prior to elections, in our  Nonpartisan Voter Guide, allowing voters to understand and compare candidate positions, side by side, on issues of interest. 

Over 110,000 copies of LWV's Nonpartisan Voter Guide
 were distributed prior to the November 2020 election.

Live Candidate Forums

We host live forums prior to elections, allowing local candidates to respond to questions solicited from the community.

To be eligible to register to vote you must be:

  • A Michigan resident (at the time you register) and a resident of your city or township for at least 30 days (when you vote)
  • A United States citizen
  • At least 18 years of age (when you vote)
  • Not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison
  • Snowbirds are considered a resident in the state where they have a Drivers' License

Proof of residency if registering within two weeks of Election: If you register within 14 days of Election Day, you must show proof of where you live. Documents must have your name and current address. You can show a digital copy of documents. Acceptable documents include:

  • Michigan driver’s license or state ID
  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck or government check
  • Other government document"

How To Register

Customers at MI Sec. of State branch offices for driver's licenses  and personal ID cards (PID) who are eligible will be automatically registered to vote unless the person opts out.  Branch office staff will verify eligibility during the DL transaction. 


More than 15 days before the election?  You may register in person at at MI Sec. of State offices  or  Online on the Secretary of State Website. 

14 or fewer days before the election?  Registration must be in person at a Sec. of State Office or your Local Clerk's Office.

College students can register with home or school as their address, but it must match the driver's license. If it doesn't the driver's license will automatically be changed to match your voter registration address.

New in 2024 Michigan provides 9 days of early in-person voting.  This may be at a different location form your regular polling place.  Contact your clerks office to clarify where early voting is located.


You can only vote where you are registered. If you move you need to reregister.

MI laws requires voters show photo ID, however there is an affidavit process to allow those without ID to vote.






All registered voters can now vote by mail in Michigan.Voters must submit an application for an absent voter ballot before a ballot can be sent by your City or Township Clerk. Applications are available from your City or Township Clerk or online.

Voters can decide to be placed on a permanent absent voter ballot list. The City or Township Clerk will then mail an absent voter ballot for all future elections.

Absentee Ballots may be returned by US mail or delivered to your city or township clerk’s office or drop box.
